Terms of use
Effective 20 October 2026
Watashi is licensed to you under Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the standard EULA). The terms below add to it. Where they differ, these terms apply to Watashi.
No account creation required
Watashi needs no account, and there is no server of ours. Your purchases belong to your Apple Account; your history and cards stay on your iPhone and in your own iCloud (see the privacy policy).
What is free
The download, the places, the Allergy card, Price, Learn and the phrasebook are free. Translating anything else, a sentence the phrasebook does not have, a conversation or a menu explained, needs a pass.
Passes
- What a pass is. A Weekly pass (7 days), a 15-day pass or a 30-day pass lets you translate for that many days. Each is an in-app purchase at the price the App Store shows you, charged to your Apple Account.
- It never renews. You pay once. Nothing is charged when a pass ends, and there is nothing to cancel. Buy another pass if you want more days.
- When it starts. A pass starts on your first translation after you buy it, not on the day you buy it, and runs for its number of days from then, by your iPhone's clock.
- Which devices. Passes need the translator, which needs about 6 GB of memory; they are not offered on iPhones and iPads with less (see Support).
- Restore. Settings › Passes and restore › Restore purchases brings back a pass bought with the same Apple Account.
- Refunds. Purchases are made through Apple. Refunds are Apple's to grant, under its terms, at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Prices may change. A change never affects a pass you have already bought.
Translations
Watashi's translations come from a phrasebook and from a machine translation model on your iPhone. Machine translation can be wrong, and the phrasebook has not yet been reviewed by a native speaker. We make no promise that a translation is correct or complete. For anything that matters, such as health, money or travel plans, make sure the other person has understood you.
Menus and the Allergy card
- The menu card says what a dish usually contains, not what this kitchen puts in it. Ask the staff before you order.
- The Allergy card carries what you tell it. It is not medical advice and is no substitute for telling staff in person. Check anything about allergies or medicine with the staff.
As is, and limits on liability
Watashi is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, as far as the law allows. To the fullest extent the law permits, we are not liable for any loss arising from a translation, a menu card, the Allergy card or any other use of the app, or for any indirect or consequential loss. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including your statutory rights as a consumer.
Credits
The translator is built on CAT-Translate by CyberAgent, under the MIT licence. Every licence is listed in the app under Settings › Licences.
Changes
We may update these terms. The current version is always at this address with its effective date. Continued use after a change means you accept it.
